Zero Waste Living

Overview

This week, let’s make a commitment to reduce the trash we generate. It’s a big step towards living more sustainably.

Activities & Challenges

This week, we have 3 activities and 3 challenges.

Activities

  1. Instead of buying something new, see if you can get it for free or second-hand! Check out sites like Nextdoor, Facebook Marketplace or BuyNothing. Or, just make it yourself –  (e.g. bread, yogurt, face scrub, deodorant) to reduce packaging! Added bonus – you’ll probably save money too.
  2. Eliminate disposables (paper towels, paper napkins, disposable plates, cups, flatware….). Use cloth towels, cloth napkins, reusable plates, cups and cutlery instead.
  3. Repurpose items whenever possible. Use leftover bags as garbage can liners, reuse aluminum foil.

Snap a photo of your free, second-hand or homemade item and send it to webmaster@cherryhillna.org. Then, take a peek at our Zero Waste Living in Our Community gallery (below)!

Challenges

  1. Eliminate disposable water bottles. Use your own reusable water bottle.
  2. Ditch grocery store plastic produce bags for fruits and vegetables. Instead, use cloth bags (washable + reusable!) or repurpose bags you already have on hand (e.g. bread bags, cereal inserts)
  3. What was your best Zero Waste action this week?

Use our ZERO WASTE CHALLENGE Submission Form to share what you did. If you have a photo, please send it to webmaster@cherryhillna.org and/or use the hashtag #ZeroWaste if you post to social media. Look for them in our Zero Waste Living in Our Community gallery (below)!

Send your photos (and descriptions!) to webmaster@cherryhillna.org

Other Actions You Can Take

  • Replace plastic food wrap with reusable bees wrap, lidded containers or a bowl with a plate on top!
  • Repair/fix it if possible! Check online “How To” guides or look for an upcoming Repair Cafe event
